The Beatles signalling HELP ... or do they?

There is a tradition of over interpreting The Beatles album covers, a tradition well worth honouring! One might think this cover is the easiest, they're signalling HELP using the Royal Navy system, right? No, that signal looks like this:

Well, that just makes it a whole lot more interesting, we're dealing with a hidden message! But not only that, its a ciphered hidden message as the image is mirrored, just look at their coats! Unfortunately, George and Ringo are signalling poorly, so we need to guess a little. I will not name all the possible permutations, just say that LPUS bears the most credibility, as it can be pronounced "Help us!"

The truth, however, is quite dull. They tried HELP but didn't like the looks of it, so they just improvised signs of their own. The Internet Beatles Reference Library will tell you the whole story.
